Okinawa Soba posted a photo: It’s hard to see, but she is holding a pair of scissors in her right hand, and trimming a flower stem. Okinawa_Soba remembers doing something like that about 40 years ago, but the plant I was working on had an interesting leaf pattern, and people smoked it….! Okinawa Soba posted a photo: Another Geisha gone to the Dogs…! MANRYU was one of the most popular Geisha during the last years of the Meiji-era (until 1912), and probably into the early years of the Taisho period. Not only popular in Tokyo, but in all Japan, as she was one of the few, original advertising poster girls for all kinds of products in her day. HAWARYU was a real "looker" but a bit sullen and sultry at times. A "moody beauty" who probably appealed to the "arty and introspective" types of guys. She didn’t have the broad personal and commercial appeal that MANRYU and EIRYU seemed to have. (Eiryu will be posted next). TOKIMATSU — The laughing Geisha — was a hot ticket item as far as postcards go, BUT…she was probably in her 40s when Manryu and all the rest were popular, and seems to have faded from sight. Most people who bought her postcards didn’t realize that the photos were actually taken in the 1880s and 90s ! K. OGAWA’S Parade of Geisha Beauties photographed in the early 1890s were also "Over the Hill" by the time the popularity contest between HAWARYU, MANRYU, EIRYU, KOMAN, and TERUHA had begun. And TERUHA was just too wild, unpredictable, and full of scandals. The Advertising agencies needed a sweet, wholesome Geisha with a clean, innocent appeal for both men and women. And at the end of the Meiji era, when penny postcards flooded the land, and the mass media was was looking for a Star (before there were Movie Stars), little MANRYU the Geisha was the "It Girl" for all of Japan. Her girlish sex appeal passed the "wholesome test" of public opinion, and while helping make a bundle for those companies that used her face to sell their products, she no doubt made a ton of money for the Geisha House that employed her. Although most of this set being posted together is made up of BLACK & WHITE images, these were all made in hand-colored versions as well.
